How Long Does BIAB Last? Wear Time, Infills and How to Make It Last

Quick answer: BIAB lasts two to three weeks before it needs an infill or removal. It rarely chips in that time. What usually decides when it needs redoing is nail growth: as your natural nail grows, a gap appears at the cuticle and the weight of the nail shifts towards the tip, which makes lifting and breaks more likely. With good prep and slow-growing nails some people go a little longer, but leaving BIAB much beyond three weeks increases the risk of lifting.

BIAB (Builder in a Bottle) is a brush-on builder gel that adds strength to the natural nail. Here is what affects how long it lasts, how to get the most from every application and how to tell when it is time for an infill.

How long BIAB lasts compared with other nail options

Option Typical wear What happens next
Gel polish Two to three weeks Full removal and reapplication
BIAB Two to three weeks Infill over the existing layer, or full removal
Regular nail polish A few days Remove and repaint

BIAB and gel polish wear for a similar length of time. The difference is that BIAB adds strength to the natural nail and can be infilled, so you don't need to soak it off and start again every time. Read more in our BIAB vs gel polish guide.

What affects how long BIAB lasts?

  • Nail prep: natural oils on the nail plate are the main cause of early lifting. Removing cuticle from the nail plate, lightly buffing, and using a dehydrator and primer give BIAB the best possible grip.

  • Application: thin, even layers cure more fully than thick ones. Keeping BIAB off the skin and cuticles, and capping the free edge, stop lifting from the edges.

  • Curing: under-cured BIAB is softer and lifts sooner. A strong lamp, such as a 180W UV/LED lamp, cures each layer quickly and evenly.

  • How fast your nails grow: fast-growing nails show regrowth sooner, so they may need an infill closer to two weeks.

  • Daily life: long soaks in hot water, cleaning products without gloves and using your nails as tools all shorten wear time.

How to make BIAB last longer

  1. Never skip the prep. Dehydrator and primer take seconds and make the biggest difference to retention.

  2. Apply thin layers and cure each one fully.

  3. Cap the free edge by running the brush along the tip of the nail with every layer.

  4. Wear gloves for washing up and cleaning.

  5. Use cuticle oil daily. It keeps BIAB flexible and the surrounding skin healthy, which helps prevent lifting.

  6. Don't use your nails as tools for opening cans or scraping labels.

  7. Infill on time. Every two to three weeks keeps the nail balanced and stops the tip from becoming heavy.

Signs it's time for an infill or removal

  • A visible gap of natural nail at the cuticle
  • Lifting at the cuticle or the sides
  • Chips or cracks in the BIAB
  • The nail feeling heavy or unbalanced towards the tip

Infill or full removal?

Infill if the BIAB is still well attached. File it back to a thin, even layer, rebalance the shape and apply fresh BIAB over the top and the regrowth. You can repeat this cycle without soaking off each time.

Remove completely if it is lifting, a nail has cracked underneath, or you want to change products or take a break. Follow our step-by-step guide on how to remove BIAB at home to do it without damaging your nails.

Why is my BIAB lifting after a week?

Early lifting almost always comes down to one of four things: oils left on the nail plate (prep skipped or rushed), BIAB touching the skin or cuticle, layers applied too thickly, or a lamp that isn't curing fully. Fix the prep first, as it is the most common cause.

Frequently asked questions

How long does BIAB last?

Two to three weeks before it needs an infill or removal, depending mainly on how fast your nails grow and how well they were prepped.

Can BIAB last four weeks?

Sometimes, if your nails grow slowly and the prep was thorough. Most people find regrowth shows at two to three weeks, and leaving BIAB longer increases the risk of lifting and breaks.

Does BIAB last longer than gel polish?

The wear time is similar, around two to three weeks for both. BIAB's advantages are the extra strength it gives the natural nail and the option to infill rather than remove.

How often should you get a BIAB infill?

Every two to three weeks, or as soon as you see regrowth or lifting at the cuticle.

Does BIAB damage your nails?

Not when it is applied and removed correctly. Damage usually comes from peeling BIAB off or over-filing. Read more: does BIAB damage your nails?
