Can You Use Base Coat as a Top Coat? Gel and Regular Polish Explained

Quick answer: No, you shouldn't use base coat as a top coat, with gel polish or regular polish. A base coat is designed to grip the nail and stay slightly tacky so colour can bond to it. A top coat is designed to dry or cure hard, smooth and glossy so it protects the colour underneath. Used on top, a base coat stays sticky or soft, looks dull, picks up dust and scratches, and wears away quickly. The reverse doesn't work either: a top coat used as a base doesn't grip the natural nail, so the manicure lifts or peels off early. The only exception is a product sold as a 2-in-1 base and top coat, which is formulated to do both.

Base coat vs top coat: the difference

Base coat Top coat
Job Grips the natural nail and anchors the colour Seals and protects the colour
Where it goes First layer, straight onto the prepped nail Last layer, over the colour
Finish Slightly tacky or soft, usually not glossy Hard, smooth and glossy (or matte)
Texture Often thicker and more flexible, to bond with the nail Harder, to resist scratches and chips
Also helps Reduces staining from dark colours and smooths ridges Adds shine, stops colour dulling and chipping
Used the wrong way round Sticky, dull, scratches and wears quickly Poor grip: lifting and peeling

What happens if you use base coat as a top coat?

With gel polish

A gel base coat is designed to cure with a slightly tacky surface, so the next layer has something to bond to. On top of your colour, that means:

  • A sticky or soft finish that picks up lint and dust, even after wiping
  • Little or no shine, and the shine it has fades within days
  • Scratches and dents, because base coats are softer than top coats
  • Colour that dulls or stains, because nothing is sealing it from daily wear

Rubber base coats are thicker and more flexible still, which is ideal for bonding to the nail but makes them even less suited to a durable top layer. If your top coat looks dull or cloudy even when you're using the right one, see how to fix a dull or cloudy gel top coat.

With regular nail polish

Regular base coats are made to stay slightly grippy so polish adheres to them. Used on top, they dry slowly, stay soft, look dull and offer much less chip resistance than a top coat, so the manicure won't last as long. In a pinch it's better than nothing, but a proper top coat will always give you more shine and wear.

Can you use top coat as a base coat?

No. A top coat dries or cures hard and smooth, which is exactly what you don't want next to the natural nail. Colour has nothing to grip, so it lifts at the edges or peels off in one piece, often within a few days. With gel, this can also take layers of your natural nail with it when it peels. Here's what happens if you don't use a base coat with gel polish.

Do you need a top coat?

For gel polish, yes. Gel colour cures with a tacky layer on top, and without a top coat it stays dull and scratches easily. The top coat seals the colour, gives the glossy finish and is a big part of why gel lasts two to three weeks.

For regular polish, it's strongly recommended. A top coat helps polish resist chips, adds shine and stops the colour looking worn after a day or two. Many top coats also help polish dry faster. Reapplying a thin layer every few days helps a regular manicure last longer.

Types of top coat

Type What it does Used with
No-wipe gel top coat Cures glossy with no sticky layer, so there's nothing to wipe off Gel polish, BIAB, builder gel
Wipe gel top coat Cures with a sticky layer that you remove with cleanser and a lint-free wipe Gel polish, and some nail art techniques
Matte top coat Gives a velvety, non-shiny finish Gel or regular polish, depending on formula
Quick-dry top coat Speeds up drying time Regular polish
Gel-effect top coat Gives a gel-like shine without a lamp, but doesn't last like real gel Regular polish

Can you mix gel and regular base and top coats?

No. Gel and regular polish work in completely different ways: gel cures under a UV/LED lamp, while regular polish air-dries as solvents evaporate. A regular top coat won't bond properly to gel, and a gel top coat over regular polish can trap solvents, which leads to wrinkling and peeling. Stick to one system from base to top, ideally from the same brand, so the layers are designed to bond with each other.

What about 2-in-1 base and top coats?

Some products are sold as 2-in-1 base and top coats and are formulated to work in both positions. They're convenient, especially for regular polish, but a dedicated base and top coat usually gives better grip at the bottom and more shine and durability on top. If a product isn't labelled as a 2-in-1, don't use it as one.

Applying base and top coat properly

  1. Prep first. Push back the cuticles, remove dead cuticle, lightly buff off the shine, and with gel, apply dehydrator and primer. See is primer necessary when using gel polish?

  2. Base coat: one thin layer, kept off the skin, with the free edge capped. Cure it if you're using gel.

  3. Colour: two thin coats, each cured or left to dry.

  4. Top coat: one thin layer over the whole nail, capping the free edge, then cure or let it dry fully.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use base coat as top coat?

No. Base coat is designed to stay slightly tacky so colour can grip it. As a top coat, it stays sticky or soft, looks dull and wears away quickly.

Can I use top coat as base coat?

No. Top coat cures or dries hard and smooth, so colour can't grip it, and the manicure lifts or peels off early.

Is base coat and top coat the same thing?

No. They may look similar in the bottle, but a base coat is made to bond to the natural nail and a top coat is made to seal and protect the colour.

What happens if you don't use a top coat on gel polish?

The colour stays slightly tacky, looks dull and scratches easily, and the manicure won't last as long.

Do you need a top coat with regular nail polish?

It isn't essential, but it's strongly recommended. A top coat adds shine, helps polish dry and makes it much more resistant to chips.

Can I use regular top coat over gel polish?

No. Regular top coat won't bond properly to cured gel and wears away quickly. Use a gel top coat and cure it.

What is a no-wipe top coat?

A gel top coat that cures glossy with no sticky layer, so there's nothing to wipe off afterwards.

Can I use BIAB as a top coat?

BIAB is a strengthening layer, not a top coat. It still needs a top coat over it for a durable, glossy finish.
