How to Remove Gel Nail Polish at Home Without Damaging Your Nails

Quick answer: To remove gel nail polish at home, lightly file off the shine of the top coat, place a cotton pad soaked in pure acetone on each nail and wrap it in foil. Leave for 10 to 15 minutes, then gently push the softened gel away with a cuticle pusher. Buff away any residue, wash your hands and apply cuticle oil. Never peel gel polish off, as it takes layers of your natural nail with it.

Gel polish lasts two to three weeks because it cures into a hard, bonded layer, and that same bond is why it needs a little patience to remove. Done properly, removing gel at home is safe and takes around 20 to 30 minutes.

What you'll need

  • Pure acetone: it must be 100% acetone. Regular nail varnish remover won't break down gel.
  • Cotton pads and foil: cut the foil into squares big enough to wrap each fingertip.
  • A nail file: a 180 grit file is ideal for removing the top coat shine without damaging the nail.
  • A cuticle pusher or orange stick.
  • A buffer block to smooth away residue.
  • Cuticle oil and petroleum jelly or a rich balm to protect your skin.

How to remove gel nail polish at home, step by step

  1. Set up safely. Work in a well-ventilated room, away from any open flame, as acetone is highly flammable. Wash and dry your hands.

  2. Protect your skin. Apply petroleum jelly, balm or cuticle oil to the skin around each nail. Acetone is very drying, and this barrier keeps it on the nail.

  3. File off the shine. Lightly file the surface of each nail until the gloss is gone. This breaks the top coat seal so the acetone can get through. You only need to remove the shine, not the colour.

  4. Soak and wrap. Saturate a cotton pad with acetone so it is wet but not dripping, place it on the nail and wrap the fingertip snugly in foil. Repeat on every nail. Wrapping your hands in a towel keeps them warm, which helps the acetone work faster.

  5. Wait 10 to 15 minutes. Then unwrap one nail. The gel should look lifted, wrinkled or crumbly.

  6. Push, don't scrape. Gently push the softened gel from the cuticle towards the tip. If any resists, rewrap that nail for another 5 minutes rather than forcing it.

  7. Buff lightly. Smooth away any remaining patches with a buffer block. Go gently, as over-buffing thins the natural nail.

  8. Wash and rehydrate. Wash off any acetone, then massage cuticle oil into your nails and cuticles, followed by hand cream.

How long does it take to remove gel polish?

Allow 20 to 30 minutes for a full set, most of it soaking time. Gel polish is a thinner layer than BIAB or builder gel, so it usually soaks off faster. If you are removing BIAB, follow our guide on how to remove BIAB at home instead, as it needs more filing first.

Can you remove gel polish without acetone?

Not effectively. Gel polish is designed to break down in acetone, and home remedies such as vinegar, lemon juice, or warm water with salt and oil won't dissolve cured gel. They only soften the edges enough to tempt you to peel it, which is what causes damage. Non-acetone removers are also far too weak for gel.

The only acetone-free option is filing all the gel off, which nail technicians do with an electric nail file. At home, filing it all off makes it very easy to file into and thin your natural nail. If acetone dries your skin, protecting the skin around the nail with a balm and using cuticle oil afterwards is the safer answer.

Mistakes that damage your nails

  • Peeling or picking: gel takes the top layers of your natural nail with it, leaving it thin, weak and patchy.
  • Skipping the filing step: without breaking the top coat seal, the acetone can't reach the gel and you end up scraping.
  • Not soaking long enough: if it isn't lifting easily, give it more time, not more force.
  • Using regular nail varnish remover: it won't break down gel.
  • Over-buffing: a light buff is all you need.
  • Skipping aftercare: acetone dries out the nail and skin, so always finish with cuticle oil.

Aftercare once your gel is off

Use cuticle oil once or twice a day to rehydrate the nail and the skin around it. You don't need to give your nails a long break to "breathe", as nails get their oxygen from the bloodstream, not the air. If they feel thin or dry, a few days of regular cuticle oil before your next manicure will help. If your nails look damaged after gel, our guide to whether gel polish damages your nails explains the usual causes.

For nail technicians

In a salon, many technicians use an electric file to remove most of the colour and finish with a short acetone soak, or file back to a thin base layer and reapply over it. Both methods depend on good e-file control, so practise on a practice hand before working on clients, and always keep the bit moving at a low speed near the natural nail.

Frequently asked questions

How long should you soak gel nails in acetone?

Around 10 to 15 minutes after filing off the shine. If the gel doesn't push away easily, rewrap and soak for another 5 minutes.

Can I use regular nail varnish remover on gel polish?

No. Regular and non-acetone removers aren't strong enough to break down cured gel. You need 100% acetone.

Is it bad to peel off gel nail polish?

Yes. Peeling pulls away the top layers of your natural nail, which is the main cause of thin, weak nails after gel.

Can you remove gel polish naturally without acetone?

Not effectively. Household remedies such as vinegar, lemon juice or salt soaks won't dissolve cured gel. Acetone with a protective balm around the nail is the safest at-home method.

Why do my nails feel weak after removing gel?

Usually because the gel was peeled, scraped or over-buffed, or because acetone has dried the nail out. Removing gel gently and using cuticle oil daily helps your nails recover.

How often can I have gel polish removed and reapplied?

You can reapply straight after a careful removal. If your nails feel thin or dry, give them a few days of cuticle oil before your next manicure.
