How to Do Gel Nails at Home: A Step-by-Step Guide

Quick answer: To do gel nails at home, prep the nail first: push back the cuticles, remove dead cuticle, shape and lightly buff off the shine. Then apply dehydrator and primer. Apply a thin base coat and cure it, then two thin coats of gel polish, curing each one. Finish with a top coat, cure, and massage in cuticle oil. Keep every layer thin and off the skin, cap the free edge each time, and cure every layer fully. A well-applied gel manicure lasts two to three weeks.

This guide follows the Belle Beauty gel system step by step, with the curing times we recommend for our 180W UV/LED lamp. Your first set will take around an hour. With a little practice, most people get it down to about 30 to 45 minutes.

What you'll need

  • A UV/LED lamp: gel polish won't set without one
  • Nail prep dehydrator and acid-free primer
  • Base coat and top coat
  • Gel polish in your chosen shades
  • A cuticle pusher and cuticle nippers
  • A nail file and a buffer block
  • Lint-free wipes and nail cleanser
  • Cuticle oil

The Belle Beauty At Home Gel Nail Kit includes all of these: six HEMA & TPO-free gel polishes, dehydrator, acid-free primer, base coat, top coat, cuticle tools, files, buffers, lint-free wipes, cuticle oil and a 180W UV/LED lamp. If you already own a lamp, the Gel Polish Essentials Set has everything else.

How to do gel nails at home, step by step

Step 1: Prep your natural nails

  1. Push back your cuticles with a cuticle pusher and lift away any dead cuticle sitting on the nail plate. Trim hangnails with nippers, but don't cut the living skin.

  2. File your nails to shape. Use the finer 180/240 grit on natural nails, filing in one direction.

  3. Lightly buff the whole nail surface with a buffer block to remove the shine. Buff gently, as over-buffing thins the natural nail.

  4. Wipe away the dust with a lint-free wipe and cleanser.

From this point, avoid touching your nails with your fingers. Skin oils are the most common cause of gel lifting. Our guide to nail prep explains each step in more detail.

Step 2: Dehydrate and prime

Apply dehydrator to each nail to remove any remaining oil and moisture. Follow with a small amount of acid-free primer on the nail plate only, avoiding the skin, and let it air-dry for a few seconds. Primer helps the base coat grip the natural nail and is one of the biggest factors in how long gel lasts. Read is primer necessary when using gel polish?

Step 3: Apply the base coat

Apply a thin layer of base coat. Leave a hair's-width gap at the cuticle and side walls so nothing touches the skin, and cap the free edge by running the brush along the tip of the nail. Cure for 60 seconds. Don't wipe the base coat after curing: the slightly tacky layer helps the colour bond. Here's what happens if you skip the base coat.

Step 4: Apply your first coat of colour

Wipe excess gel off the brush on the neck of the bottle, then apply a thin layer of colour. Start with a small bead near (not touching) the cuticle, then pull it down to the tip in three strokes: centre, then each side. Cap the free edge. The first coat often looks streaky or sheer, and that's normal. Cure for 60 to 90 seconds.

Step 5: Apply your second coat of colour

Apply a second thin coat in the same way to even out the colour, cap the free edge again, and cure for 60 to 90 seconds. Sheer or light shades may need a third thin coat. Two or three thin coats always last longer than one thick one, because thick gel doesn't cure all the way through.

Step 6: Seal with top coat

Apply a thin layer of top coat over the whole nail, cap the free edge one last time, and cure for 60 to 90 seconds. The Belle Beauty top coat is no-wipe, so your nails come out of the lamp glossy and ready to go, with no sticky layer to remove.

Step 7: Finish with cuticle oil

Apply a drop of cuticle oil to the base of each nail and massage it into the cuticle and surrounding skin. Here's how to use cuticle oil to get the most out of it.

How to cure gel polish properly

  • Cure every layer: base coat, each colour coat and the top coat all need their own full cure.

  • Cure thumbs separately: thumbs roll away from the light, so cure your four fingers together, then lay each thumb flat in the lamp on its own.

  • Do one hand at a time, or four fingers then the thumb, so gel doesn't flood towards the skin while you wait.

Our guide to UV lamps and curing gel polish explains how to tell when gel is fully cured.

Fixing mistakes before you cure

Gel stays workable until it goes in the lamp, so you can tidy up as you go. If gel touches the skin or cuticle, wipe it away with the tip of your cuticle pusher wrapped in a lint-free wipe dipped in cleanser, before curing. Once cured, gel on the skin lifts as soon as the skin moves, and repeated skin contact with uncured gel is how allergies develop.

Common beginner mistakes

Mistake What happens How to fix it
Rushing prep Gel peels off in one piece Remove dead cuticle, buff off all shine, dehydrate and prime
Layers too thick Wrinkling, bubbles, soft spots Use two or three thin coats instead of one thick one
Gel on the skin Lifting at the cuticle Leave a hair's-width gap and clean up before curing
Not capping the free edge Chips at the tip Run the brush along the tip with every layer
Short cures Soft gel that dents, peels or lifts Cure every layer fully, thumbs separately
Streaky first coat Patchy colour Normal: a second thin coat evens it out

Aftercare: making gel last

Use cuticle oil daily, wear gloves for washing up and cleaning, and don't use your nails as tools. A well-applied gel manicure lasts two to three weeks, and it usually needs redoing because of regrowth at the cuticle, not because the gel has failed. Read how long gel polish should last for the habits that help.

Removing gel polish at home

Never peel or pick gel off, as it takes layers of your natural nail with it. Lightly file off the shine of the top coat, then soak in pure acetone with cotton pads and foil for 10 to 15 minutes, and gently push the softened gel away. Follow our step-by-step guide on how to remove gel nail polish at home.

Is gel polish safe to do at home?

Yes, when it is applied to the nail, not the skin, fully cured, and removed by soaking rather than peeling. Allergies to gel usually develop from repeated contact between uncured gel and the skin. Every Belle Beauty base coat, gel polish and top coat is HEMA-free and TPO-free, which lowers the risk of a reaction. If your skin becomes red, itchy or swollen around the nails, stop using gel and read how to treat an allergic reaction to gel nail polish.

Frequently asked questions

How do you do gel nails at home for beginners?

Prep the nail, apply dehydrator and primer, then a thin base coat, two thin colour coats and a top coat, curing each layer under a UV/LED lamp. Finish with cuticle oil.

How many coats of gel polish should I apply?

Usually two thin coats of colour, plus a base coat and a top coat. Sheer or light shades may need a third thin coat.

How long do you cure gel polish?

With the Belle Beauty 180W UV/LED lamp, cure the base coat for 60 seconds, and each colour coat and the top coat for 60 to 90 seconds. Always cure thumbs separately.

Do I need primer for gel polish?

It is strongly recommended. Primer helps the base coat grip the natural nail, and skipping it is one of the most common reasons home gel lifts early.

Why is my gel polish streaky?

A streaky first coat is normal. A second thin coat evens it out. If later coats are streaky too, the gel is probably too thick or the brush has too much product on it.

Why is my gel polish peeling off?

Usually because of oils left on the nail (dehydrator or primer skipped), gel touching the skin, or layers that weren't fully cured.

Can you do gel nails without a UV lamp?

No. Gel polish only hardens under UV/LED light. Without a lamp, it stays wet.

Do I need to wipe gel nails after curing?

Not with the Belle Beauty top coat. It is no-wipe, so it comes out of the lamp glossy with no sticky layer.

How long do home gel nails last?

Two to three weeks with good prep, thin layers and full cures, just like a salon set.
