How to Remove BIAB at Home Without Damaging Your Nails

Quick answer: To remove BIAB at home, file away the top coat and most of the colour, then soak each nail in pure acetone using a cotton pad wrapped in foil for 15 to 20 minutes. Gently push the softened BIAB away with a cuticle pusher, lightly buff off any residue and finish with cuticle oil. Never peel or pick BIAB off, because it takes layers of your natural nail with it.

BIAB (Builder in a Bottle) bonds firmly to the natural nail, which is why it lasts two to three weeks and why removing it takes a little patience. Done properly, removing BIAB at home is safe and takes around 30 to 45 minutes for a full set.

Do you need to remove BIAB completely?

Not always. If you are planning to reapply BIAB, you can do an infill instead: file the existing BIAB back to a thin, even layer, then apply fresh BIAB over the top and over the regrowth. Infilling avoids soaking your nails in acetone every few weeks.

A full removal is the better choice if your BIAB is lifting, a nail has cracked underneath, you want to switch to a different product, or you simply want a break. Not sure which you need? Our guide to how long BIAB lasts covers the signs it is time for an infill or removal.

What you'll need

  • Pure acetone: it must be 100% acetone. Non-acetone polish remover will not dissolve BIAB.
  • Cotton pads and foil: cut the foil into squares big enough to wrap each fingertip.
  • A coarse nail file: a 100/180 grit file removes the top layers quickly.
  • A cuticle pusher or orange stick to lift the softened BIAB.
  • A buffer block to smooth away residue.
  • Cuticle oil to rehydrate afterwards.
  • Optional: an electric nail file (e-file) to reduce the bulk faster.

How to remove BIAB at home, step by step

  1. Protect your skin and space. Acetone is very drying, so rub cuticle oil into the skin around your nails first. Work in a well-ventilated room, away from any open flame, as acetone is highly flammable.

  2. File off the top layers. Use the coarse side of your file to remove the shine of the top coat, then file away most of the colour and bulk, leaving a thin layer of BIAB over the nail. Stop before you reach your natural nail. If you use an e-file, keep it on a low speed and keep it moving.

  3. Soak in acetone. Saturate a cotton pad with acetone, place it on the nail and wrap the fingertip tightly in foil. Repeat on every nail and leave for 15 to 20 minutes. Wrapping your hands in a towel keeps them warm, which helps the acetone work faster.

  4. Check one nail, then push. Unwrap one nail. The BIAB should look soft and slightly crumbly. Gently push it away from the cuticle towards the tip. If it resists, rewrap the nail for another 5 minutes rather than forcing it.

  5. Buff away residue. Lightly buff off any remaining bits with a buffer block. Go gently, as over-buffing thins the natural nail.

  6. Wash and rehydrate. Wash your hands to remove the acetone, then massage cuticle oil into your nails and cuticles, followed by hand cream.

How long does it take to remove BIAB?

Allow around 30 to 45 minutes for a full set. Most of that is soaking time. Filing away more of the bulk before you soak shortens the soak.

Mistakes that damage your natural nails

  • Peeling or picking BIAB off: it pulls away layers of the natural nail, leaving it thin and weak.

  • Scraping hard: if the BIAB isn't lifting easily, it needs more soaking time, not more pressure.

  • Filing into the natural nail: leave a thin layer of BIAB for the acetone to dissolve.

  • Using non-acetone remover: it won't break down BIAB, so you end up scraping and filing more.

  • Over-buffing: a light buff is enough to remove residue.

Aftercare once your BIAB is off

Use cuticle oil once or twice a day to rehydrate the nail and the skin around it. You don't need to give your nails a long break to "breathe", as nails get their oxygen from the bloodstream, not the air. If they feel thin or dry, a few days of regular cuticle oil before reapplying will help.

Frequently asked questions

Can you remove BIAB at home?

Yes. With pure acetone, foil, cotton pads, a file and a cuticle pusher, you can remove BIAB safely at home in around 30 to 45 minutes.

How long should you soak BIAB in acetone?

Around 15 to 20 minutes, after filing away the top coat and most of the colour. If the BIAB doesn't push away easily, soak for another 5 minutes.

Can you remove BIAB without acetone?

Not easily. BIAB is a soak-off product, so the only alternative is filing all of it off, which makes it easy to file into and thin your natural nail. Acetone is the safer method.

Does removing BIAB damage your nails?

Not when it is done correctly. Damage comes from peeling, picking, scraping too hard or over-filing. For more detail, read does BIAB damage your nails?

Can I use an e-file to remove BIAB?

Yes, to reduce the bulk before soaking. Keep the speed low, keep the bit moving and stop before you reach the natural nail, then soak off the final thin layer with acetone.
