What Is Gel Nail Polish? How It Works and How It Compares to Regular Polish

Quick answer: Gel nail polish is a long-wear nail colour that hardens under a UV/LED lamp instead of drying in the air. It is applied in thin layers (base coat, colour and top coat), with each layer cured in the lamp. The result is a glossy, chip-resistant manicure that lasts two to three weeks, compared with a few days for regular polish. It is removed by soaking in acetone.

Gel polish has become the go-to manicure in salons and at home. Here is how it works, how it compares with regular polish and BIAB, what to look for when choosing one, and whether doing it at home is right for you.

How does gel polish work?

Regular polish dries as its solvents evaporate. Gel polish works differently: it contains ingredients called photoinitiators that react to UV/LED light. When you place your nails in the lamp, that reaction links the gel into a hard, flexible layer bonded to the nail. This is why gel is dry the moment it comes out of the lamp, and why it lasts so much longer. Our plain-English guide to photoinitiators explains the chemistry.

Because it only hardens under light, a lamp is essential. Gel polish won't set without one. See do you need a UV lamp for gel nail polish.

Gel polish vs regular nail polish

Gel polish Regular polish
How it sets Cures under a UV/LED lamp Air-dries as solvents evaporate
Drying time Dry as soon as each layer is cured Touch-dry in minutes, but can smudge or dent for longer
Typical wear Two to three weeks A few days
Finish High gloss that lasts Glossy at first, dulls with wear
Equipment Lamp, prep liquids, base and top coat Base and top coat
Removal Soak off with 100% acetone Wipe off with regular remover
Best for Long-lasting, low-maintenance colour Changing colour often

Choose gel if you want colour that lasts through work, holidays and events without chipping. Choose regular polish if you like to change colour every few days and don't want a removal step. You can also paint regular polish over cured gel for a temporary change, then take it off with non-acetone remover so the gel underneath isn't affected.

Gel polish vs BIAB and builder gel

Gel polish is mainly about colour. BIAB (Builder in a Bottle) is a thicker gel that adds strength to weak or brittle natural nails, and builder gel is used to build structure and length. All three cure under the same lamp and can be layered, for example gel polish colour over a BIAB base. Our guide to BIAB vs builder gel vs gel polish compares them in detail.

How a gel manicure is applied

  1. Prep: push back the cuticles, remove any cuticle on the nail plate, shape, lightly buff off the shine and apply a dehydrator and primer so the gel can grip.

  2. Base coat: one thin layer, cured in the lamp.

  3. Colour: two thin coats, each cured. Keep gel off the skin and cap the free edge by running the brush along the tip.

  4. Top coat: one thin layer, cured, to seal the colour and add shine.

What to look for in a good gel polish

  • HEMA-free: HEMA is one of the most common causes of allergic reactions to gel nails, so a HEMA-free formula lowers the risk. Read what HEMA-free means.

  • TPO-free: TPO is a photoinitiator that was banned in cosmetics across the EU from September 2025, so gel sold there must be TPO-free.

  • A matched system: base coat, colour and top coat designed to work together bond better and last longer.

  • Self-levelling texture: a formula that settles smoothly makes thin, even coats easier, especially at home.

  • Good pigmentation: strong colour in one or two thin coats means less product and a more complete cure.

  • Bottle size: full-size bottles give you more manicures per shade.

Every Belle Beauty gel polish is HEMA-free and TPO-free, comes in a full-size 15ml bottle, and is part of a matched system with our base coat, top coat and prep liquids.

Is gel polish safe?

Gel polish is safe for most people when it is applied and removed correctly. Three things are worth knowing:

  • Allergies: reactions usually develop from repeated contact between uncured gel and the skin. Keeping product off the skin, curing every layer fully and choosing HEMA-free products lowers the risk. If you notice redness, itching or swelling around the nails, remove the gel and speak to a pharmacist or doctor. See how to treat an allergic reaction to gel nail polish.

  • UV exposure: nail lamps emit UVA light, and research into the long-term effects of regular exposure is ongoing. If you want to reduce your exposure, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to the backs of your hands before your manicure, or wear fingerless UV-protective gloves.

  • Nail damage: this almost always comes from peeling gel off or over-filing during removal, not from the gel itself. Read does gel nail polish damage your nails?

Caring for and removing gel polish

Use cuticle oil daily, wear gloves for washing up and cleaning, and don't use your nails as tools. Our guide to how long gel polish should last covers the habits that make it last. When you're ready for a change, soak it off gently. Never peel gel, as it takes layers of your natural nail with it. Follow our guide on how to remove gel nail polish at home.

Gel nails at home or in a salon?

A salon gives you a trained technician and no equipment to buy. Doing gel at home takes a little practice and an upfront investment in a lamp and prep products, but after that each manicure costs a fraction of a salon visit and fits around your schedule. With good prep and thin layers, home gel lasts just as long.

The Belle Beauty At Home Gel Nail Kit includes six HEMA & TPO-free gel polishes, a 180W UV/LED lamp and the full prep system. If you already own a lamp, the Gel Polish Essentials Set has everything else.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between gel and regular nail polish?

Gel polish cures under a UV/LED lamp and lasts two to three weeks. Regular polish air-dries and usually chips within a few days. Gel needs acetone to remove, while regular polish wipes off with standard remover.

How long does gel polish last?

Two to three weeks when applied with proper prep and fully cured.

Do you need a lamp for gel polish?

Yes. Gel polish only hardens under UV/LED light, so it won't set without a lamp.

Can you put regular polish over gel?

Yes. Paint regular polish over fully cured gel for a temporary colour change, then remove it with non-acetone remover so the gel underneath stays intact.

Is gel polish bad for your nails?

Not when applied and removed correctly. Most damage comes from peeling gel off or over-filing during removal.

Can I use gel polish with BIAB?

Yes. Gel polish layers over cured BIAB, so you can combine BIAB's strength with gel polish colour.

Is Belle Beauty gel polish HEMA-free?

Yes. Every Belle Beauty gel polish is both HEMA-free and TPO-free.
