The Hygiene Playbook: Clean, Disinfect, Replace

Whether you are doing your own BIAB at the kitchen table or starting a small side-hustle as an at-home nail tech, there is one thing that matters more than your apex or your cuticle work: Hygiene.

Proper sanitation isn't just about avoiding a "messy" desk; it’s about preventing "The Greenie" (bacterial infections), nail fungus, and cross-contamination.

In the professional industry, we follow a three-tier system. Let’s break down your new Hygiene Playbook.

1. Step One: CLEAN (The Physical Scrub)

Cleaning is the removal of visible debris—dust, skin, and leftover gel. You cannot disinfect a tool that is dirty.

  • The Logic: If there is nail dust on your pusher, the disinfectant can't reach the surface underneath it.

  • The Action: Use warm soapy water and a dedicated nail brush to scrub your stainless steel tools.

  • Bestie Tip: Do this immediately after every manicure so the gel dust doesn't "set" on the tool.

2. Step Two: DISINFECT (The Pathogen Killer)

This is where you kill the "invisible" enemies - bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

  • The Logic: Cleaning removes the dirt; disinfecting kills the germs.

  • The Action: Submerge your cleaned, dried metal tools in a hospital-grade disinfectant (like Barbicide) or 70% Isopropyl Alcohol for at least 10 minutes.

  • The Rule: Your tools must be completely submerged. Once done, rinse them and let them air-dry on a clean paper towel.

3. Step Three: REPLACE (The Single-Use Rule)

This is the part many at-home techs get wrong. Some items simply cannot be disinfected because they are porous (absorbent).

  • The Logic: If you can't submerge it in liquid without ruining it, you can't disinfect it.

  • The Action: These items must be replaced frequently or used as "single-use" items:

    • Nail Files & Buffers: These trap skin cells and dust in their grit.

    • Wooden Orange Sticks: These absorb moisture and bacteria.

    • Lint-Free Wipes: Never reuse a wipe!

Your Hygiene Checklist

To make it easy, follow this "Manicure Close-Out" routine:

  1. Toss: Throw away your used wipes, orange sticks, and heavily used files.

  2. Scrub: Wash your metal pushers and nippers with soap and water.

  3. Soak: Submerge metal tools in disinfectant for 10 minutes.

  4. Spray: Wipe down your UV/LED lamp and your table surface with 70% Alcohol.

  5. Store: Place dry, clean tools in a sealed, dust-free container (not a messy drawer!).

Why This Matters for DIY-ers

If you’ve read our guide on 'Why is my Builder Gel Lifting?', you know that trapped moisture is a recipe for disaster. If you apply BIAB over a nail that hasn't been properly cleaned, or use a dirty file, you are "locking in" bacteria.

A clean canvas is the only way to ensure a safe, long-lasting manicure.
