Are gel nail kits safe? What HEMA and TPO actually mean

This is the most common question we're asked, and it deserves a proper answer rather than a label.

HEMA is a monomer used in most traditional gel polishes to help them adhere and stay durable. It is also the nail industry's most common allergen. In 2018 the British Association of Dermatologists warned that methacrylate chemicals including HEMA were driving a contact allergy epidemic. A HEMA allergy typically shows as itching, redness or swelling of the skin around the nail, and once developed it is permanent. It can also affect future dental work and medical procedures that use similar acrylates. It is triggered most often by uncured gel touching the skin, which is why thin layers and careful application matter.

TPO is a photoinitiator - the ingredient that makes gel harden under a lamp. The EU's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety classified it as a substance of concern, and TPO was banned in cosmetic products across the EU from 1 September 2025. Modern alternatives such as TPO-L and BAPO cure just as effectively.

If you have previously reacted to gel polish, HEMA is the most likely cause - though gels can contain other allergens, so patch testing is always sensible if you have known sensitivities.

The honest caveat: your first attempt will not look like a salon set. Gel application is a skill, and it takes two or three tries to get thin, even layers and clean cuticle lines. How to apply gel nails at home

1. Prep. Push back the cuticles, gently buff the shine from the nail plate, then wipe with a lint-free wipe and cleanser to remove all oils.
2. Dehydrate and prime. Apply nail prep dehydrator, then primer. Do not skip this step - it is what prevents lifting.
3. Base coat. Apply one thin layer and cure fully.
4. Colour or builder. Apply in thin layers, capping the free edge, curing each layer. Two thin coats always beat one thick one.
5. Top coat. Apply, cure, and finish with cuticle oil to keep the surrounding skin healthy.

Keep gel off the skin and cuticle. Uncured gel touching skin is the main route to developing a sensitivity, and it also causes lifting at the edges.

Choosing between kits: what actually matters

• Lamp power. Anything under 48W will struggle to cure dark or highly pigmented gels evenly, which causes peeling and can leave uncured product against the nail. Our kits use a 180W dual UV/LED lamp.
• Whether prep is included. A kit without a dehydrator and primer is not a complete kit, whatever the product count says.
• Formula. HEMA-free and TPO-free matters most if you have sensitive skin or have reacted before.
• Total cost, not headline price. A cheaper kit that omits the lamp, prep or top coat costs more once you have bought the missing pieces.
